Leaders as Coaches: Developing Coaching Capabilities That Drive Growth and Performance

What if one of the most powerful things a leader could do was stop giving answers and start asking better questions?

Today's leaders need to do more than direct work and solve problems. They must develop talent, build trust, encourage ownership, and help others reach their potential. Coaching is an essential leadership capability that can make that possible.

In this engaging, interactive session, we'll explore what it means to lead with a coaching mindset and how learning and development professionals can help build coaching capabilities throughout their organizations. Participants will examine the difference between directing and coaching, practice essential skills such as active listening and powerful questioning, and explore the GROW model as a practical framework for everyday leadership conversations.

We'll also consider how L&D professionals can move coaching beyond the classroom and into everyday leadership practices to create a culture of continuous learning, stronger performance, and meaningful employee development.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Differentiate between coaching and traditional directive leadership approaches, recognizing how a coaching mindset supports employee growth, engagement, and performance.
2. Apply foundational coaching skills, including active listening, powerful questioning, and the GROW model, to facilitate effective leadership conversations.
3. Identify practical strategies for developing and reinforcing coaching behaviors within their organizations to support a culture of continuous learning and development.

Angela Hummel is an experienced talent development and leadership development professional, executive coach, and owner of Angela Hummel Consulting.
